Here are TEN good things that we accomplished together in 2020

WA Board Dec 2020

1. UNEARTHED NC: An eco-minded virtual writers retreat in collaboration with Southerly Magazine.

2. NEW STORYTELLERS: We added more than a dozen first time storytellers to the writers collective. Check out the profiles of some of our storytellers here!

3. SEVEN SAFE VOTING SITES: Our seven voting safe sites were a success in Lumberton, Pembroke, Salisbury, Greensboro and Mebane with about 600 visitors across the state. The Lexington site was shut down unfairly.

4. PUBLISHING PARTNERSHIPS: Writers published related stories in national magazines like SLATE, NC Policy Watch, Scalawag Magazine, Prism Magazine and Medium.

5. EQUITY: Women AdvaNCe works to develop bold new initiatives to benefit and support North Carolina’s women and their families.

Here are a few examples of original stories we published this year: Not Like the Indians On TV, Hello History, Being Black in the Media.

6. REPARATIONS: This year Women Advance created a Reparations Fund to help community organizations like Shatter the Silence and EcoRobeson on their journey toward 501(c)(3) status. We are urging other nonprofits to do the same.

7. VIRTUAL EVENTS:

8. PAID LEAVE/COVID RELIEF/STORYTELLERS: North Carolina women spoke out on their experiences with COVID in the workplace. Lisa De Novo(musician) spoke about losing $17,000 because of the pandemic.

Their experiences were recorded and will be provided to our partner the NC Justice Center.

We published Am I essential? One CNA’s eye opening story

9. PROFESSIONAL JOURNALISM STORIES: In collaboration with the NC Justice Center and Family Cares Coalition, Women AdvaNCe sponsored several professional journalism stories.

Working Parents and COVID

The Intersection of COVID-19 and Paid Family Leave

What Happens if There are No Childcare Centers After COVID?

10. CULTURE & HERITAGE MONTH STORIES:

Here are a few examples:

Black History Month – CROWN Act

Immigrant Heritage Month – My Mother: The Surviving Immigrant

Refugee Awareness Month – Venezuela to America

Latinx Heritage Month – Mental Health and the Stigma in the Latinx Community

Native American Heritage Month – Not Like the Indians on TV
(Received the most views than any of our content in 2020).

A BIG THANKS to all of our supporters!
Sincerely,

The Women AdvaNCe Board of Directors
